Dear Personal Development Traveler,

Remember what it was like meeting someone new? The exchange of names? Them using yours? You forgetting theirs? And the longer the conversation went on the more awkward it got...

Rare is the person who, upon meeting someone new, will not care about how they come across. It's a survival strategy at the DNA level to make alliances, or connections in modern parlance.

Unfortunately, as our mind tries to juggle many balls in order to make that ideal first impression, such as:

👀  Good eye contact

😁  A smile

🤝  A handshake

🤔  Making an intelligent sounding opening comment

👂  Listening to the other persons response

🤐  Trying to strike a balance of not under-sharing or over-sharing

🙄  Remembering their name when they give it

and inevitably one or more of those balls are going to drop…

With so many thought balls in the air, the name remembering one is nearly always the one you take your eye off first...

Of course you could simply ask them to repeat their name when it starts to become obvious they're using your name, but you're not using theirs back...

Have they noticed? - you bet they have...

Will they think you're just shy or not confident enough to use their name? Maybe, but honestly, do you really want them thinking that?

In a social setting it's easily forgivable, after all, at some time or other we've all forgotten someones name, and its more than fair to ask for a repeat - if you do it early on in the conversation...

What makes remembering and using a name so powerful? - Quite simply, it's the most important sound in anyones universe...

The sound of your own name on someone elses lips tells you:

• They were focused on you when they gave it...
• They were actively listening to you when you gave it...
• It also tells you they consider you an equal - because they also want to make a good impression on you...
• It tells you they are socially confident because they aren't over-whelmed by their internal thoughts

ALL THIS INFORMATION about a person is being revealed in the simple act of them using your name - or you using theirs...
